Legion Claims “Man Has Conquered Gulf War Syndrome”

Read this story and then come back to my post and see why this really pisses me off!

http://www.legion.org/washingtonconference/214028/has-man-conquered-gulf-war-

I’m really happy that the “Great Conqueror” has no more tummy aches, but the rest of us in the real world have the real Gulf War Syndrome! It doesn’t have a darn thing to do with having a bad meal in Iraq for most of us. In fact if you read the Federal Benefits Handbook for the VA it does not even come up. I don’t know about you, but I was warned about not eating the local cuisine. Anyway, this is all about how he ate a bad meal and then figured out he had some rare stomach virus.
Now, I’m just going by what is in the story, maybe there’s more to it, but according to the story am I wrong in saying:
What on earth does that have to do with GULF WAR SYNDROME?? And thank god there’s a cure now – I guess I can go to the VA and get it? Oh, what’s that, NO? Why not??…. I’m confused!

hero

I believe the editors of this article and American Legion really were reaching when they talked about “conquering” and “cure” for gulf war syndrome knowing that those two words would come up in searches for those of us who are desperate for information about why we are all sick with things that have nothing to do with what this man has according to the article. I feel that the editors and the Legion should retract this headline and make a statement on behalf of the editor’s mistake in trying to pull readership with a cheap shot. I was an editor and a publisher for several years and I know how it works and I never stooped this low. They have a responsibility to their readers, veterans and members to publish the facts and use journalism for the good of this audience, not to sell magazines and get hits on the site. I am just going out on the limb here and I really hope I’m wrong about him “curing the disease” but I bet we never hear another word about this guy. This will just fade away just like the rest because all he did was for his own self-interest not for the good of us all in my opinion. But, hey, I’m not a Major in the Army and so I guess my opinion doesn’t matter.

I wonder if anyone at the legion has read the Federal Benefits VA Regulations on what the definition of Gulf War Illness is. Fibromyalgia, respiratory Disorders, Chronic Fatigue, Mental Disorders, Sleep Disorders etc.. I didn’t hear anything about that from him. Just that he had some bad chow. Wow, and then he figured how to cure himself and now he’s a big hero? Seems like he should either get a reward or a reprimand. You decide.

  1. Hey! I could have sworn I’ve been to this blog before but after checking through some of the post I realized it’s new to me.
Nonetheless, I’m definitely happy I found it and I’ll be book-marking

  2. I would like to show my thanks to the writer just for rescuing me from this predicament. After looking out throughout the the web and getting opinions that were not pleasant, I figured my entire life was over. Being alive without the presence of solutions to the issues you’ve resolved as a result of your good short article is a critical case, as well as the ones that might have in a negative way affected my entire career if I had not noticed your web site. Your expertise and kindness in touching all the stuff was precious. I don’t know what I would have done if I had not come across such a point like this. It’s possible to now look ahead to my future. Thanks a lot very much for this expert and sensible help. I will not be reluctant to endorse your blog post to anyone who requires support on this subject.

    1. Mike, I am glad to see that you have found something that works. Could you provide a post for me that would be credited to you as an author with some more information? I certainly interested in trying this myself and I think if it’s beneficial to you it will be beneficial for us all! Can you tell me was this supported and prescribed by VA doctors or civilian doctors or is it just something you bought over the counter? Any information you can provide I can either make your post or you can e-mail me and I will pass it along to my readers. I am totally in support of any natural treatments. Anything to get off of narcotics is definately a great thing. Do you take anything in addition to this or is this it? Anything you can elaborate on would be so helpful. I am always open to any suggestion of a new treatment! I think it’s really great that if you have 42 problems and it helped you then it must be able to help othes. Thanks so much for bringing this to my attention. This should be the kind of article that publications like the Legiona and other vet orgs should be running. How long have you been on this treatment?

  4. My son was in the Marines for 2 years, his MOS was the amtracs. He said they might have been waterproof, but they sure weren’t sand-proof. He began having trouble with his memory and patience. I was about the send him to other doctors when he was killed in a freak accident at Camp LeJune.

    1. My god, I am so sorry, I read this and i just slammed my fist onto my desk. It’s just such a terrible tragedy when these things happen. Have you talked with an attorney or did you choose to just not go there. It’s all up to you, sir, I don’t want to tell you what to do. I choose my words carefully when speaking of these things because I would never want to offend a guy who lost a son who was just trying to be a better man and join the ranks of the great Marines. I have memory and patience problems and I have trouble just walking from room to room in my home, I don’t understand why he wasn’t pulled from duty and given a sick in quarters pass. Do you have records or do you want to investigate further. I think if it was my son I would want to know what happened. The military is certainly not perfect and many mistakes happen all the time. The Gulf War was full of friendly fire incidents. I once met a tank commander on liberty in Bahrain who had just received a chest full of medals for firing on the wrong tank. He took the medals and chucked them into the desert and started crying. He was haunted by it. I wish I was qualified to help you, but I’m sure that you could find an attorney who is if that’s where you want to go. Otherwise I can respect if you just want to leave it rest. If there’s anyting I can do to help let me know. I will certainly honor his memory with a moment of silence and prayer, sir. God bless you and the soul of your son. I am so very sorry for your loss. I have two sons and I can’t imagine. No parent should have to bury their kid. I am here for you if you ever need to talk and we have a lot of others who can offer to help you too. This is a place of honor.

      1. When he died, I talked with my lawyer, who did not feel qualified to answer – so he brought in 4 others. After a year, everyone gave up and I just couldn’t go thru anymore. I appreciate your concern for a fellow soldier and I am sorry for your trouble. I can’t help my son any more and it was never about the money just answers – now – I’m not sure I really want to know just how much he went thru. Thank you for your interest and sentiment.

      2. Your welcome, I’m sorry for bringing up a difficult time, but it seems like you have closure now and that is important. It’s not so much about the money for me either, but I could use a little more. I barely make it as it is and the biggest problem is that they changed the travel pay. It used to be if you had to travel far to a clinic or hospital they gave you cash at the door, now you get a check within 90 days and I just can’t afford it with everything wrong with me. They want me to go about 5 times a month on average and if I reschedule they get upset with me. Things are changing for good and bad, though. Some of the new VA policies I do like and I know there are some hard-working dedicated folks who do their best and just have to follow the rules. Well, you take care and if you ever feel the need to talk to someone you are always welcome to do so here! I encourage all the comments I can get. I check it most every day so don’t be afraid. I can’t say the same about my email- I’m overwhelmed with spam! Take Care and god bless!

    1. Thanks, I wasn’t aware. Maybe it had something to do with the very animated long e-mail I sent to them about not getting our hopes up. I used to be a copy editor and it was my job to write headlines and I was very careful not to make the headlines overstated like that or anything other than what the story was about. I took my job seriously and I wasn’t even at a very important publication like the American Legion magazine. I just think it was a cheap shot to get hits on a site that maybe is losing an audience. My wife looked at my post and was like, “They’ll never let you near a legion again!” I said, “Well, I would think that most members would buy me a beer if I am just pointing out a mistake!” Everyone makes mistake and if it was an honest mistake then I understand, but you just can’t afford to make mistakes when we are hoping for some sort of cure or solution for the problems that consume our lives! Thanks for pointing that out, though and keep on commenting my friend!

It seems too complicated and extremely vast for me.
I’m looking ahead to your subsequent submit, I’ll attempt to get the cling

  9. With havin so much content and articles do you ever run into any problems of plagorism or copyright violation?
My website has a lot of exclusive content I’ve either written myself or outsourced but it appears a lot of it is popping it up all over the internet without my agreement. Do you know any solutions to help protect against content from being stolen? I’d
    definitely appreciate it.

    1. well, I know that most of what I write I just post a link to the article and then I write about it. I don’t plagorize it – I just comment on it. There is a lot of comment on the internet that is fair game such as photos that the owner allow the public to use. All I know is that my words are from the heart and not stolen from anyone. If I use a quote, I always name the source. Other than that I check the AP style book. That is the industry standard for journalists. But if someone wanted to sue me they would not be able to. I receive a non-taxable government pension that cannot be touched and that is my only income. That doesn’t mean that I don’t respect the rights of others. I have not posted anything from anyone without permission. Hope that helps. Thanks for stopping by and come back often! God bless.

    1. I appreciate it. I don’t know why, but I just love to write and I think bein sick gave me the inspiration to just not care what anyone thinks. Of course, sometimes I wonder if I am being a bit harsh, but hey, I call it like I see it. Keep at it and I’m sure you will find the effort. If you would like to co-write something or need help I’m always interested in cool stuff like that. I don’t charge for anything even though I should, but I’m just like that. I am working on a book, though, about my dad’s memoirs and then after that I plan to do one on this blog. Good luck and god bless. Comment anytime! Always welcome here. Very open.

A fantastic read. I’ll certainly be back.

  12. This is a great blog and very informative, there are a lot of hurting vets out there, it is the same here in Canada and also the UK. I’m not even sure who run the Legions these days, we lost ours thru a manager who sold the funds and put us into bankruptcy. He was an associate member. Thanks for visiting my blog and following.
